Nine Steps Involved in New Window Installation in Schaumburg, IL

Published , By Brian Olson

Window installation is an intricate process that needs to be done correctly to ensure that you reap the maximum benefit of energy efficiency, as well as security for your home. It is best to hire a professional, well-experienced new window installation company who can get the job done right in your Schaumburg home.

Here are nine of the most common steps that should be followed when installing a new window:

1. Casing and Trim Removal

The first step is to remove the jamb extension and the window trim from the old window. This jamb extension is nothing but a ripped down piece of wood that is attached to match the window with the wall.

2. Old Track/Guide Removal

The next step is to remove the window by unscrewing it, while at the same time, being careful so that the window does not break. Often windows have multiple sashes and need to be removed individually.

3. Preparing the Opening

Once the old window is removed, it is important to inspect the condition of the jamb to identify if there is any structural damage. There is a chance that a minor leak could cause the jamb to rot. If that is the case, these areas will have to be replaced or repaired before going to the next step.

4. Window Stop Inspection

Placed around the exterior of the side, the window jamb is a piece of wood. It serves the function of stopping the motion of the window, and also prevents it from shifting within the opening. The stop that’s currently on the window, if in working condition, can be reused and does not necessarily have to be replaced.

5. Dry Fitting the Window

The best practice is to always check the fitting of the window to make sure it fits correctly before applying silicone to the window stop. If there are any fitting issues, you will want to make a correction so that the window fits snugly in the frame.

6. Installing the Window

The installation step of the window is somewhat intricate. It needs to be put in place by running a bead of silicone and then screwing it on the sides until it anchors the jamb. However, it’s crucial that you make sure the window is leveled and fits correctly. The window can be leveled by placing minor shims between the jamb and the bottom of the frame.

7. Adding Insulation

Any gaps that appear around the frame of the window, screws, or studs need to be insulated before moving to the next step. If the gap is large, strips of insulation can be used. Also, expanding spray insulation can be used for spots that are harder to reach.

8. Adding Trim Molding

This is the step that focuses on the window’s aesthetics. We recommend choosing a style that goes hand in hand with your home’s decor. The trim is attached to the wall with nails, and a jamb extension needs to be inserted to cover the gap between the drywall and the new window.

9. Finishing Touches

The final step is to finish the window by filling and framing nail holes with paintable or stainable putty so that the trim molding will have a complete look.
