How to Fix a Window that is Sealed Close

Published , By Brian Olson

Now that the weather is warmer, you may want to open the windows around your home to enjoy the sounds of the outside world. Birds chirping, cool breezes, and children playing can be quite enjoyable, but all of this can be locked away if your windows aren’t functioning properly. If your window is stuck and refuses to open, then follow these steps to fix the issue.

Fix a Window that is Sealed Close

How To Open a Stuck Window

In order to protect yourself and the window from possible damage, avoid using excessive force to try and pry it loose. A broken window can cause a litany of additional issues, such as potentially harming yourself. The best recommendation is only to apply slight pressure to the window, and if it doesn’t budge, then proceed with the following steps.

  • Clean the Window – Dirt and dust build-ups can create immense friction in the window, causing it to remain shut. A simple cleaning solution and some elbow grease can eliminate the pesky particles and allow you freedom from the outside world. You can also look for a window lubricant that can be easily sprayed to allow easier opening and closing of the window.
  • Painted over windows – Whether by accident or on purpose, paint in the window sash can seal the window, making it extremely difficult to operate. Examine your windows for any paint in the crevices, and use a putty knife or similar tool to break that seal.

While these are the two most common ways to fix a broken window that is stuck, there could be underlying issues that are more difficult to resolve. If you have followed the above steps but your windows are still inoperable, then contact Olson Windows for a window repair appointment. We will be able to easily diagnose and replace a broken window in an efficient manner.
