Five Signs that Indicate You Need New Windows in Inverness

Published , By Brian Olson

Unlike HVAC units, ductwork, and other major household appliances that normally have scheduled maintenance, the condition of windows is often overlooked and neglected. What makes it worse is that if you have wood or aluminum framed windows, you may not even notice the problems caused by them.

So, when is the right time to replace the windows of your Inverness home? Here are some of the signs that you should keep a lookout for:

1. Leaky Windows

The primary test to check the efficiency of your windows is to stand beside them and notice if you feel a draft, or if the windows are cool to touch. This indicates that the window does not have an airtight seal, which causes your heating and cooling system to work harder to maintain the desired room temperature.

Another test would be to place a candle or an incense stick near all the edges of the window. If the smoke moves or the flame flickers, it indicates small holes or gaps that need to be sealed up.

Additionally, it’s important not to ignore even the tiniest puddle of water forming near the windows after a rainfall. Even if it’s a minor leak, water seeping into the house could fuel the growth of mold and lead to serious damage in the future. In such a case, it is best to have the windows examined for accurate installation and insulation.

We recommend replacing leaky windows at the earliest in order to maintain more comfortable room temperatures, and to save on heating and cooling costs.

2. Decaying Frames

This is a clearly visible sign. If you notice, particularly after spring when the window frames have been exposed to moisture, that the frame has started decaying, it is time to take immediate action. Moisture, if allowed to build up, could lead to serious damage down the road.

3. Window Operation

The adequate functioning of your windows is important to ensure that you don’t have to struggle every time you wish to open or close a window.

Windows should be able to slide freely on the frame. If it requires additional force or makes an unpleasant sound in operation, they should be examined for rusted or swollen frames.

4. Condensation

Not all types of condensation are bad for windows. This primarily depends on where the condensation appears on the window. If you notice condensation on the inside of the window, it could be due to the temperature settings of the room. However, if you notice it in between two panes of glass, it could mean that the seals of the window are no longer functional. In this case, the seals should be inspected and replaced to avoid any further deterioration.

5. Soundproofing

A simple test for soundproof windows is done by waiting at the window to hear a car pass by. A new, energy efficient window should be able to absorb these sound waves before they enter your house. If a single-pane or a double-pane window is unable to block out this noise, it can disrupt the silence and peace inside your home.
