Top Five Tips to Maintain your Windows: Tips from a Cary Windows Company

Published , By Brian Olson

Maintaining your windows is an important part of regular home maintenance that you should not overlook. After all, windows lift the aesthetic appeal of your home and also add to its resale value.

Therefore, it is important to keep your windows dirt-free as well as airtight. This will keep them in good working condition and increase the energy efficiency of your home.

When performed regularly, window maintenance can save you both time and money in the long run. In this post, we’ll cover five tips that can be incorporated as part of your regular window maintenance program in Cary:

1.Clean Windows Monthly

A monthly cleaning can go a long way in keeping your windows beautiful and in good working condition. Often times, windows that have blinds, shades, drapes, or curtains are neglected since they are covered up.

On a rotational basis, check your windows for any dirt or debris accumulation. Based on your external environment (industrial, residential, or proximity to a highway) and weather conditions, you may decide to clean the windows on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. When cleaning the windows, be sure to check the glass for any early signs of crack or damage.

2. Lubricate the Window Tracks

Lubrication helps in the smooth operation of any moving part. In the case of windows, dirt and debris can accumulate in the tracks, making the windows stiff when trying to open and close them. This is also true for window locks, handles, and latches.

Periodically, you should clean the window tracks first with a vacuum cleaner, then apply an all-purpose non-detergent oil. Alternatively, you could also use a solution of water and mild soap. This will help in keeping the windows smooth during operation.

3. Insulate Windows Before Winter

Window seals, frames, and weather-stripping are exposed to wear and tear due to harsh weather conditions. Adding extra insulation to your windows will protect them from extremely cold temperatures in the winter.

Additionally, you can also install thermal window treatments for more protection and supplementary insulation.

4. Paint Your Window Frames

Sunlight can make the frame of the window brittle, causing it to crack and peel. If your windows are old or are constructed with wooden frames, you may need to get them painted once a year.

Before painting, small gaps can be filled using durable caulk, and expanding foam can be used to seal gaps over a quarter of an inch. You can apply a water-based paint to prevent peeling, or even use an acrylic-urethane paint for more durability.

5. Replace or Repair Damaged Surfaces

Inspect the frame to see if there is any noticeable damage to the surface. Cracks, holes, and splinters, if left unattended, can expand and even become a breeding ground for mold or mildew. It’s recommended that you hire a window replacement expert to decide if the damage can be repaired, or if the frame needs to be replaced altogether.

The maintenance tips mentioned above are quick and easy to implement. However, if you are still experiencing rising electricity bills and cold draft leakage, you may need to install replacement windows.
