Spring Window Maintenance

Published , By Brian Olson

It’s springtime and that means spring cleaning. Spring window cleaning and maintenance is important to keeping your windows operating smoothly.
Washing Exterior Windows: Start with a solution of warm water and detergent. Start from the top and work your way down the window removing dirt and grim with a soft towel or sponge. Then use another soft towel to dry or squeegee them clean. Clean away any dirt and mold on the framing with a solution of water and ammonia.
Inspect and Repair: Check the window frames and sash for wood rot. Mild wood rot can be repaired if caught in time. Make necessary repairs and paint.
Wash Screens: Remove screens from their tracks and use a hose to clean away dust and dirt. Rub gently with a wet cloth if necessary. Let them dry and reinstall screens.
Wash Interior Windows: First clean the channels with a brush or vacuum clean. You can wash your windows with a spray bottle and paper towels. However try using warm water, detergent and a squeegee. You’ll actually get your windows cleaner in a fraction of the time. Check out this helpful article.
Final Inspection: Inspect the glass for cracks and hardware to assure smooth operation. Broken windows should be replaced by a professional.
